Pio Pico District News Letter
Our scout master, Mr. Warren, was recently the subject of the "Who's Who" article for the BSA news letter! The link to the article is below.
Pio Pico District News Letter On Saturday, January 21st, Troop 985 had a much-needed trailer and storage room clean-up day. This event was organized to get our equipment and supplies in order for the start of the new year. The clean-up day was a great opportunity for the scouts to come together, work as a team, and learn the importance of keeping their gear organized.
Troop 985's trailer and storage room clean-up day was a huge success, and it set the tone for a productive and organized camping season. The scouts will continue to take pride in their gear and work together to keep their equipment in top shape. A well-maintained and organized trailer and storage room are essential for a successful and enjoyable camping season. On January 10th, Troop 985, our troop, held a flag retirement ceremony to dispose of worn and tattered American flags in a dignified and respectful manner. The ceremony, which was held outdoors, was a powerful demonstration of the troop's commitment to preserving the dignity and symbolic significance of the American flag. Flag retirement is an essential tradition in the United States, and it is designed to honor the sacrifices made by generations of Americans who have fought and died for their country. By retiring flags in a ceremonious manner, we pay tribute to the ideals and values that the flag represents, such as freedom, democracy, and national unity. For Troop 985, the flag retirement ceremony was a chance to demonstrate their commitment to these values, and to show their respect for the flag and all that it represents. The ceremony was conducted with great care and attention to detail, as the boys carefully folded the flags and placed them in a fire pit. As the flags burned, the scouts stood at attention, saluting the flag as a symbol of their respect and gratitude. Whittier – This past Tuesday we had our scout-buck auction. We bid on items that scout families brought with scout-bucks that were earned by doing scout events during the last 6 months. We all had a very fun time buying items with scout-bucks and look forward to earning more for the next auction!
10 December, Whittier – On Saturday we all met in downtown Whittier for the annual Whittier Christmas Parade. Our troop has been invited to help start the Christmas parade as the color guard. We invite other troops and pack to help carry flags down the parade route with us. Thank you Mr. Warren for setting this up.
Calico Campout and Rocket Launch
19 November, Calico – Our campout in Calico this past November was great. It was cold but fun. We got to go on a hike through old mines, visit the ghost town on Calico and shoot off rockets. Thanks Mr. Warren (Camp) and Mr. Crisi (Rockets) for organizing this event! Originally we were going to backpack up at Mt. Lowe for the weekend. The weather was going to be bad this weekend in the mountains so we turned the backpacking trip into a practice day hike with our backpacking to test out our equipment. Thanks Mr. Marucci and Mrs. Dorner for setting this up!
15-31 October – East Whittier. Our annual troop fundraiser was held outside for the last two weeks of October at the East Whittier United Methodist Church. The pumpkins were brought in from the Navajo Nation in New Mexico with proceeds that went to support the Navajo Nation and a percentage of sales raised for Troop 985. Special thanks to Mr. Jensen for helping set this up for the troop!
7-9 October, Prado Regional Park – We had Troop-o-ree this season. Normally we would have Camp-o-ree along with 400+ other scouts from our council. Unfortunately, this year, sign-ups were low so it was cancelled. Troop 985 and three other Troops decided to move forward with a Camp-o-ree of our own so that the scouts could still experience some friendly competition. It was a good weekend to learn new things and hang out with good friends.
